I believe that language, song, dance and poetry are inherent in human nature. In this spirit, I will help you to write basic poetry with ease and turn it into songs, or at least assist you in writing songs that you have already structured. With poetry, you can play with words and phrases, mix and match them, and develop a bushel full of words and phrases that you'll have ready to develop your song's theme, characters, and ideas. At the very least, you will avoid writer's block because you've pre-written your own rich variety of words and phrases.
STEP 1. MAKE A LIST. Describe anything; just write down the words, such as things in your bedroom, your mom, your brother or sister, your instrument, your school, your job, the electronics store, an incident in your life that you'd have rather forgotten, a person or incident in your life that you want to remember forever. Make a list of words that describe sounds you hear or people you see as you go through your day. This is not complicated, it's just words in a column.
STEP 2. PLAY WITH YOUR WORDS. Try grouping them in twos and threes. On a separate sheet of paper, start writing some words that sound good together.
STEP 3. SAY YOUR WORDS AND PHRASES TO A BEAT. Try them with a metronome to get a steady rhythm.
STEP 4. SING YOUR WORDS TO A MELODY LINE. Remember, you can always regroup your words and add new words to fill in the phrases.
STEP 5. RAN OUT OF IDEAS? Make another list. If you've been tying your words to a song theme, give yourself a break and use the ideas in STEP 1 to generate something completely new. Then go back and see the difference.
